    What I Should Have Said
    What I Should Have Said:

"The French call it l'esprit d'escalier, 'the wit of the staircase,' those biting ripostes that are thought of just seconds too late, on the way out of the room or even, to tell the truth, days later."

    Palm Keyboard
Alasdair bought me a palm keyboard for a "this really isn't a late birthday/christmas present - honest" present. :)

I had some troubles with old keyboard software not wanting to be removed from my palm but now it's all good! Yay! This is going to make taking notes at TAFE so easy!!

    I'm pretty excited anyway :P

Australian IT - Telstra warned over ADSL (Kate Mackenzie, FEBRUARY 25, 2004): "THE competition watchdog has issued Telstra with an advisory notice for selling ADSL direct to consumers for less than it charges its wholesale customers."

I think there's something wrong when the only wholesaler is allowed to be a retailer too.

    Adelaide IV 2006
I've just been chatting to Fiona about the next Adelaide IV. It's going to be really important to get some excellent music for us to sing. I am going to run for convenor. I think I'll have a chat to Mark about whether he would like to be an official spokesperson for me if I am elected. I think Mark is a fantastic public speaker and group motivator. I just want to make the festival a great one. :)

Also, I'm toying with the idea of an IV committee blog to track what people are doing. Whenever anything important is completed it gets added to the blog. Is that too geeky? Will it work? I think it will depend on the committee.

    Weekly World News
Weekly World News: "A big fat opera singer was charged with assault and hauled off to jail after she gored a tiny tenor with her horned hat.
The vicious attack unfolded after a performance of Wagner's opera Das Rheingold as the cast was sharing a celebratory dinner of spaghetti and meatballs backstage.
Witnesses say the trouble erupted when 5-foot-2 tenor Giuseppe Verona, 38, forked up the last meatball from the serving platter and dropped it on his plate.
Five-hundred-pound soprano Helga Von Kluge, 52, took exception and charged him -- head down -- like a bull in a ring."

This has got to be a joke!! Hehe!

    Relaxing day
After a gorgeous fruit salad at T-Bar Alasdair and I trundled down to Freedom to get some makeshift (oops! nearly had a freudian typo - makeshit) furniture. I bought a pretend wardrobe and ordered a shelf for the bathroom that I failed to measure and then realised it wasn't going to fit anyway. Alasdair went to a LAN party about lunch time. I took back the DVD (Bad Eggs) we borrowed from Kino on Thursday night and pointed out that it had been pretty scratched. They told me to take a freebie. So i did. I watched "View from the top" (which is a silly, girly movie with Gwynneth Paltrow and Christina Applegate in it) over lunch. Finally, I decided it was a nice day for a walk (it was raining) so I set off back to Freedom to get refunded for the shelf I ordered and now didn't want. After wandering around town for a while I realised I had horrible blisters and had to pike and catch the bus home. Plus, I ended up with a much cheaper, nastier version of the shelf I wanted for the bathroom because nothing else was going to fit! *grumble* I've set up the shelf since getting home and pretty much done bugger all since then. "Mrs Doubtfire" is on TV tonight.. followed by "Being John Malkovich" so I think I'm due for a Big Night In (TM). I've never seen "Mrs Doubtfire". Even if it's crap I'll be entertained waiting for the gem of a movie to come. Maybe the TV station planned it that way. Or maybe it's one of those movie doubles designed to showcase the talents of a star who has a new movie coming out at the cinemas soon. I'm sure It will be riveting to find out. Maybe I should get icecream too. :)

    NEWS.com.au | Bad HECS debts to soar to $4.5bn (February 21, 2004):
"Opposition education spokeswoman Jenny Macklin said the burden of 'massive HECS debts' made it harder to repay them. "

What they're failing to note in this article is the sheer number of people (like myself) who most of the time are not quite earning enough money to pay back their HECS debt because they weren't able to get AUSTUDY to finish their degree, thus they are not *on* a graduate wage.. they're on a shit-kicker wage.

Salon.com Technology | Biology stirs Microsoft monoculture debate:
"Geer isn't the first to argue that the logic of living viruses also applies to the computer variety, and that the dominance and tight integration of Microsoft operating systems and software makes the global computing ecosystem vulnerable to a cascading failure. "

"Charney says monoculture theory doesn't suggest any reasonable solutions; more use of the Linux open-source operating system, a rival to Microsoft Windows, might create a "duoculture," but that would hardly deter sophisticated hackers. "

Obviously, he's not noting *why* hackers prey on poor little old windows. :)

Australian Financial Review - Job Network fiasco exposed
    Australian Financial Review:

    "Job Network fiasco exposed

Disabled people, parents and older workers are unwittingly being used to prop up a flawed $2.5 billion federal government jobs program that has already received a $670 million-a-year bail-out. By Laura Tingle Chief, political correspondent (Feb 18) "

Unfortunately I can't link to the actual report since I'm not a member of this website.. I just read the article over lunch and thought I'd make reference to it.

When I went to my job seeking course at Job Network I was one of 8 people in my 15 person class who already had a job. plus two of the people who didn't have jobs were studying. 4 people in that class actually needed work and were unable to get it.. the rest of us just needed more hours so we could not rely on benefits. She actually wanted me to skip work so I could attend her course. How absolutely deranged is that?

I should have written that paper on the inadequacies of Job Network agences years ago when they opened. I was going to.. I don't know what happenned.

    Today's Funny
A lawyer, an accountant and a physicist are discussing, over a beer, whether life is better with a wife or with a girlfriend.

"A wife is better," declares the lawyer, "because of the family support and the help she'll be to your career." "Nonsense," says the accountant.
"a girlfriend is better: you can keep your independence and go out with your friends more." They turn to the physicist, who says, "It's better to have both. That way, the wife thinks you're with the girlfriend, the girlfriend thinks you're with the wife, and meanwhile you can be down at the lab!"

    Reading..
Waiting - The True Confessions of a Waitress by Debra Ginsberg.

Tanya gave me this book for my birthday and I only just started reading it.. It's a fascinating read, especially for someone who has done waiting themselves. What with the hot weather and all (44 degrees yesterday) I've been hiding in the air conditioned lounge room with this book for most of this morning so far and a fair chunk of yesterday. As for the book, I am starting to wonder if people who haven't done wating or any equally demeaning customer service role would actually get it. On the other hand.. most people have tried it for at least a day. Even Alasdair worked in a hot dog stand for a day or two. :)

The book is actually more of an auto-biography of her own expriences waiting.. but that's what people really want to read - the real stuff. Things that *actually* happenned to her. On a twisted note it's almost like reality TV. Maybe that's the new thing.. reality books. :P But seriously, it's quite insightful and direct. I love the psychology involved. She is psycho-analysing all the customers, herself and all her fellow wait-staff along the way. I relate to it for obvious reasons. Unfortunately, despite her efforts to prove that her life has been interesting, I know how terminally boring waiting really is.. and that she has done rather a lot of it to get the amount of stories she has bundled into this novel. It's the other life experiences and psychology that make this book a worthwhile read. Plus, she is actually quite entertaining and has a great style and wit about her.

I wasn't at the party long because everyone I knew (except Molly) left pretty much at once. It was really hot, I was a bit tipsy.. but I rode home via Blackwood, Belair and Belair Road. It was way way too dark on Belair Road but I lived to tell the tale. It was such a hot night - so beautiful for riding.

BBC - Science Human Body - Mind - Careers
BBC - Science Human Body - Mind - Careers:

    I am Investigative, Conventional, Artistic

"Investigative types prefer thinking to action, they like working with information and may prefer working with ideas rather than with people. They tend to like jobs in which they can research, analyse and solve problems (or come up with new problems!) and prefer using their brains to their interpersonal skills. Typical roles that suit Investigative types are scientist, engineer, laboratory worker, computer programmer, pharmacist and vet.

Conventional types are happy to work within systems and large organisations and tend to focus on accuracy and efficiency, preferring to know what is expected of them. They tend to like things to be organised and predictable and are often involved in roles that involve recording, sorting, documenting and organising. Typical roles for Conventional types include the range of administrative and clerical roles (e.g. in the government and financial sectors) as well as accountancy, banking, bookkeeping, secretarial work and some inspecting roles.

Artistic types are interested in creativity and art, preferring freedom and independence to following rules and procedures. Self-expression is very important to Artistic types and they may prefer to work alone. Typical roles for Artistic types include artist, singer, designer, photographer, musician, writer and actor."

    World of Ends:

"Could it be because the three Internet virtues are the antithesis of how governments and businesses view the world?
Nobody owns it: Businesses are defined by what they own, as governments are defined by what they control.
Everybody can use it: In business, selling goods means transferring exclusive rights of use from the vendor to the buyer; in government, making laws means imposing restrictions on people.
Anybody can improve it: Business and government cherish authorized roles. It's the job of only certain people to do certain things, to make the right changes. "

    Do different races smell differently?
Do different races smell differently? I got this link from Memepool
This is a very strange thing to find people asking. I don't think it's race specific but there does seem to be an odour that is associated with what you eat. I attempted the lactose free world for a few weeks (I had a cold and I was also curious as to how difficult it was) and I found that people who drink milk smell like milk. You know that smell babies have (more so when they've just been fed)? It's that smell but to a lesser degree. This person has defined it as spoiled milk... but I know what they mean. It's weird. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that other pungent smells were easily identified when leaving the skin. I mean people say Onions and Garlic are smelly.. I can't tell I eat so much of it :) I notice when I eat celery I smell of it for a day or so. Conclusion: People really do smell like what they eat. People I apologise in advance.. I will never ever stop smelling like Garlic, Onion, Capsicum and Chilli. Heh. :)

    Janet has a piercing
Photo of Janet Jackson's Nipple way too close up. I'm surprised to note Janet Jackson had a piercing. Unfortunately I never really wanted to know. Choral-Chat had a post with hte subject "Stupid lawsuits 'R us....". What was I thinking? Clicking that link was *obviously* going to show me Janet Jackson's breast. Oh well. Interesting nipple ring. I bet they'll be really popular already.

    I'm so restless
It's so hot.. It's hard to do anything because you just sweat and feel gross. But I'm so restless. I went for a walk for an hour. I've done all my washing. I've started work on the FUCS magazine. I've updated my resume. I've wasted an hour watching American Idol. I'm still bored. Thoughts keep racing through my head of all the things I can do.. but I'm feeling a bit inspirationless generally. I hope TAFE keeps me interested. I am fully expecting it to bore me to tears though. *sigh* So many things I want to do with my life.. but It's too hard to cram it all in.

    Thankyou DNRC :)
"Then you have the low-carb dieters. This involves the active avoidance of life-giving antioxidants while scarfing massive amounts of known carcinogens until someone punches you to death for bragging about how much weight you lost."

"I think they must put something in food that makes you have to go to the bathroom".

"I work in a restaurant that has open-air rooftop dining. While explaining this to a woman who called to make a reservation, she asked me, "Now, the roof, is that on the top of the building?" "

"One of our school district's principals was trying to get his staff to bond. Their ears perked up when he announced, "And we really have to get closer together and learn to trust each other more. To that end, we are going to have some bondage activities this afternoon." "

Ananova - Rap fan forced to listen to Verdi
Rap fan forced to listen to Verdi:

"A US man has been ordered to listen to Verdi's La Traviata after playing 50 Cent's music too loud in his car. Michael Carreras was driving with friends with the sunroof and windows open while listening to the rapper's music on his CD player. A police officer stopped him and gave him a ticket for violating the city's strict noise laws, reports ITV.com. The incident occurred near Miami Beach, where if your stereo can be heard from 100 feet away, you can be charged. Carreras was ordered to listen to two hours of the opera.
Judge Jeffrey Swartz told him: 'You've imposed your music on me and now I'm going to impose my music on you.'
    Story filed: 20:34 Thursday 5th February 2004"

*chuckle* I didn't know judges could do that. Maybe they're going a little too far.. and how are they going to know if he did it? Sit him down and watch him listen to 2 hours of Verdi?

    *sigh* I feel shite..

One of the Funnies Jason sent me
One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her son into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, "Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?" The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug.

"I can't dear," she said. "I have to sleep in Daddy's room." A long silence was broken at last by his shaky little voice: "The big sissy."

    Boring Day.. Relaxing night
Today was more training. I'm really wanting to get out and do stuff. Oh well. Next week we have hardcore training to meet FSR requirements. We all have to be qualified to make investment decisions before we can talk to customers.. even though investment training isn't until later. :) It's law.

Tonight I might try out my new yoga dvd since Alasdair is out of the house at Pub Club. Tee hee. I should cook up really yummy food and have a self indulgent relaxing night. Mmm..

    Mars Pictures!
Rover images. I'm fascinated by the mars photos. Alasdair is more on top of the situation than I am.. but he shows me a lot of excellent photos. Also, he's noticed that most of the photos are shown with extra red sky and rocks. The sky is actually very blue.. you can see that in some less doctored shots. Why do people want to see Mars with a red sky? Why don't they just want to see what's there?

Tune Recycler - Support Indie Music with the iTunes + Pepsi Super Bowl Promotion
Tune Recycler - Support Indie Music with the iTunes + Pepsi Super Bowl Promotion This is pretty interesting.. especially as Pepsi is backing most of the major record labels.. or did they stop? Maybe it's just me. Apple - Pepsi - Super Bowl Ad 240 is apparently fraudulent also.. since the kids weren't actually prosecuted. Someone's going to get some shite over this.

    Mmm Thai Green Curry
Just had Jason over for a Thai green curry and then we all bolted out for italian hot chocolate. Mmm. As for the rest of my life there isn't much to add. I'm still in training at ACCU. I am still enrolling and sorting out RPL for TAFE. BASS are still not letting me work Saturdays while I'm at ACCU training. It's all so dull. :(
I have to get my butt over to Gymnastics or something so I have something new to excite me.

I am, you are, we are Australian!
From a larger email making the rounds:

Only in Australia can a pizza delivery get to your house faster than an ambulance. Only in Australia do we have bank doors wide open, no security guards, or cameras but chain the pens to the desk.

Stand proud Aussies - we shoot, we root, we vote. We are girt by sea and pissed by lunchtime. Even though we might seem a racist, closed minded, sports obsessed little people, at least we feel better for it.

I am, you are, we are Australian!

P.S We also shoot and eat the two animals that are on our National Crest!!!! No other country has this distinction!

    HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY!!

Coloured People - Poem Bruce reminded me of.
    Dear white fella
    Couple things you should know
When i was born, i black
When i grow up, i black
When i go in sun, i black
    When i cold, i black
    When i scared, i black
    When i sick, I black
And when I die, i black
    You white fella
    When you born, you pink
When you grow up, you white
when you go in sun, you red
    When you cold, you blue
    When you scared, you yellow
    When you sick, you green
And when you die, you grey
And you have the nerve to call me coloured?
